They call him the King Of Jazz in Sudan. Sharhabil Ahmed made a name for himself in the early 1950s when he started performing for many famous, local Sudanese icons. He is a multi-instrumentalist, famous for revolutionizing Sudanese music by mixing traditional Sudanese and Western instrumentation in his uniquely styled compositions. Influenced by Middle Eastern music, African music, and American jazz icons, he released his first single, Al Layl Alhadi in the 1960s. It was a major breakthrough for him, and he soon started getting recognized outside of Sudan. He has remained a favorite in and outside of Sudan for decades. Sharhabil’s music was famous enough to get recognized by the great Harry Belafonte. Together they performed Sharhabil’s favorite, Jamaica Farewell, on stage in Sudan! Since then, Sharhabil has continued to create music that influences a new generation of listeners and musicians. He has released seven celebrated albums, one of which was recorded and produced in Cairo, Egypt. Even though he sings in a pentatonic scale, his songs are being sung in Middle Eastern countries and non-Arabic speaking African countries.
