An enthusiastic learner, Sadig Mukhayer helps organize Nas With Notepads; a poetry event that has helped many find and share their passion for poetry in Khartoum. Sadig is a friend of the internet and is a fan of Twitter, he believes that if we can take a closer look at what’s going on on social media, we can understand the issues that the youth in our community are having trouble speaking about in other settings.
Natalina Yacoub Abbo Kanuna, The Beauty Inside Each of Us
Natalina Yacoub is the Beauty Queen of the Nuba Mountains. This 22 year-old, who won her glamourous title in a pageant organized by Nuba Mountains Annual Cultural Forum, is currently studying Business Administration at Ahfad University. Winning the title has given Natalina the opportunity to play an important role in highlighting issues in her region. It also serves to raise awareness of the importance of celebrating Sudan’s huge diversity. In addition to Arabic and English, Natalina also speaks her local dialect.
Najla Salih aka NubianQ, Being caught in the in-between
Born in Saudia Arabia, growing up in the USA while living at home with constant reminders of her duties to prepare to become the perfect Sudanese housewife, Najla turns the confusions of all these experiences and mixed cultural messages into a unique voice in poetry and short stories. Now living in Sudan she poses serious questions on the future of women as they are pulled in two opposite directions between modernity and self-fullfilment and submission to a conventionality that is no longer relevant to their lives.
Sudan Drums is a percussion orchestra performing a mix of local and world rhythms and harmonies. The group blends East/West African, Middle Eastern, Afro-Cuban, Latino and Western rhythms, harmonies, techniques, styles and more into a theatrical experience of drumming, dance and drama.
Isma’il Kushkush, Defining “Sudanese” for The Twenty First Century
A graduate of the University of California with degrees in history and international relations, Isma’il Kushkush always had a passion for history, culture and journalism. He is a published journalist with The New York Times, CNN, Al-Jazeera English and Voice of America and has a particular interest in exploring new understandings of Sudanese, African and Arab identities that promote peace and coexistence.
